What is a bioequivalence trial?
A bioequivalence trial confirms whether a generic drug is absorbed and acts in the body equivalently to the original medication. It mainly involves healthy adult volunteers, comparing blood concentrations after the drug is administered.
How it differs from a clinical trial
- Clinical trial: verifies the safety and efficacy of a new drug in patients.
- Bioequivalence trial: confirms whether a generic of an already-verified ingredient is equivalent to the original.
- Mostly healthy adults, with a relatively short duration and fewer visits.
How it works
The drug is administered at set times and blood is drawn at regular intervals to measure blood concentration. It is conducted as an inpatient stay or short visits, all under medical supervision.
